OUR NATIONAL TEAMS

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union is mandated to co-ordinate the running of affairs to do with rugby in the country.  ZRU works with regional associations in making sure that top quality players are incorporated into the National teams.

Sables

The Sables are Zimbabwe Rugby Union’s national team.  Players need to impress not only their local and regional coaches but also the national selectors as well for them to make it into the team.

Cheetahs are the Zimbabwe Rugby’s sevens national men’s team.

Players are drawn from local and international teams to make the final national squad.

Women Sables make Zimbabwe Rugby Union’s female fifteen-member team.  Players are drawn from local and international leagues.

The Women Cheetahs is Zimbabwe Rugby Union’s sevens team.  Players are drawn from local teams as well as international leagues.  ZRU encourages the participation of women in the sport of rugby, previously a preserve of men only.

The Under 20 team is made up mainly of sixth form students as well as those that have just completed their advanced level school or university freshmen.  These are the players who then proceed to make either the Cheetahs or Sables teams.

Zimbabwe Rugby Union has a policy to promote grassroots rugby in the country. It is seriously involved in coordinating tournaments for both primary and secondary schools.  This has proved helpful in identifying talent for inclusion in senior national teams.
