The Zimbabwe Rugby Union steps up preparations for return to play.
The Zimbabwe Rugby Union’s Rugby Africa COVID Relief Committee today
handed over Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and disinfectants to the various key stakeholders to ensure the safe return to play. The handover ceremony was attended by the ZRU Vice President South Mr Martin Shone, the ZRU Chief Executive Officer Mr Sifiso Made, the Chairperson of the COVID Relief Committee Ms Abigail Mnikwa, the chairperson of Harare Province Rugby Mr Joseph Kawonza and the President of the Zimbabwe Rugby Referees Society Mrs Abigail Kawonza. Mr Shone thanked Rugby Africa for having availed the funding. The Chairperson of the ZRU COVID Relief Committee Ms Abigail Mnikwa said the ZRU mandated her Committee to purchase food parcels for the players and provide PPE’s and disinfectants for the various stadia that would have been approved to be used for training and games. The venues were each provided with disinfectants, sanitisers, rubber gloves, infrared thermometers, tap buckets, bin liners and foot dispensers. This equipment will ensure that every rugby venue is compliant with the SRC guidelines and World Rugby protocols.
The Vice President South Mr Shone received the PPE’s on behalf of all the Southern Region affiliates Midlands, Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South. The rest of the equipment will be distributed to the various provinces in due course.
Harare Province chairperson Mr Joseph Kawonza thanked the ZRU for providing the equipment as they prepare to return to the field. He took this opportunity to urge all the rugby players ,administrators and enthusiasts to take advantage of the Government’s vaccine roll out to get vaccinated at the health centers nearest to them to add their layer of protection against the corona virus. Mrs Abigail Kawonza received the PPE’s on behalf of the referees and thanked the ZRU and the COVID committee for the PPE’s as this will go a long way in ensuring that the match officials are also protected and safe to return to their weekly meetings and games. The CEO Mr Sifiso Made received the face masks on behalf of the Zimbabwe Sables, Cheetahs and the young Sables U20 both men and women. The national teams will be in action soon.
